I Live With You

This week I read I Live With You by Carol Emshwiller. I wouldn't say this story has much to do with majoritarian culture or anything like that. There wasn't anything in the story that really talked about how other people live in different situations. The story was mostly just about the common fear that someone is secretly living with you in your home. However, it was much more than just the mild feeling that someone is living in your house. The person very clearly did things in the home, often nice things, to help the person out. This made their presence just noticeable but not noticeable enough for the person to call the police. It was also strange in the fact that it was told from the stalkers point of view, not the person being stalked. This provided a new and possibly scarier perspective to the narrative showing the thought processes of someone that's just messing with you to mess with you and nothing else for no reason. It was also interesting how it ends with the person leaving, saying they don't steal. It makes us wonder if they ever did anything wrong. The person just sought to help the person they were stalking but made everything worse for them.

Interview with a Vampire

When I think of vampires I always think of the craze of "sexy" vampires from the early 2000's. The book slightly gave off the vibe but it was also very interesting how they got into the psychological process and thoughts of becoming a vampire. It went into detail about Louis' decent from thinking like a human and caring about lives to not caring at all and killing a bunch of vampires and even coming close to killing the character interviewing him. It also tackled a kind of loop hole in vampire lore with Claudia and her not being able to age past five years old while her mind still developed. While I thought this was particularly very creepy, especially in the movie were it showed an actual child talking about adult things, it was still an interesting topic to include in the book. I particularly liked how the book was so involved with showing the complexity of Louis and Lestat's relationship. How it kept going back and forth between Louis thinking Lestat was aweso

HitchHikers and Satire

This week I listened to the original Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy radio show. I've always watched the movie as a kid and have always loved it but didn't even know it was based on a radio show, not the book. I really loved it more than I thought I would and it's way funnier than I remember and so so British. But it's not all just fun and gags as I used to think when I was a kid. For example, it starts right off with Arthur's house about to be forcibly being demolished against his will because the government wants to build a highway. This obviously is an example of a story that has happened to thousands of people who have been forcibly removed from their own homes because of the pointless government projects. This is immediately paralleled with the aliens destroying Earth for the exact reason. It shows how heavily it impacts the people involved and how pointless these projects can be.
